Fun Dig: Small Design Lili, 2 Fenkhausen's, & BGB

  1. That looks like it was a fun dig! Any hole where you find a glob fifth, and a tough western bitters is a good one. I love those "in situ" shots, and if that does'nt make you all want to get out and dig, I do not know what will! Nice job guys! Dale M.

  2. Great Pics, I had one of those BGB's a long time ago, I think it may have had a partial label? Great action shots.

  4. The Bitters is tooled, but still a neat bottle. I have no idea how many exist, but I have heard they are quite rare. This is the second one I've seen. The first one I saw was the night before we dug this, a friend had just dug a damaged example 100 miles north. Strange how bottles manifest themselves, going from never having seen one, to seeing a damaged one, to digging one all in less than 24 hours !!!!!!

  5. Way to go guys ! Anyone that can pull stuff like that out of SoCal these days knows their business ! It IS funny how if you talk about a brand or a bottle enough, many times one will soon appear in one way or another .

  7. A.P.,

That's where I was headed with my goal of digging a "One Name Bear" as my digging goal for the year....I did bag two Fenkhausen's, but minus the walking bear!? Oh well, I feel one step closer and on the right track I guess. It is weird how the rule of association plays out with old bottles, eh? I think digging is like a real man's "golf!" Both require years of practice, "local knowledge," tons of patience (also a short memory of bad events), and a little shot of luck/timing. Much of the journey is a mental battle....
Kentucky Gem- I've tried the Clubhouse thing and nothing to show so far. But I do keep in mind a quote from Henry Ford: "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right." I CAN find a Clubhouse, I CAN find a Clubhouse....All together now....

You'd be surprised at what can happen in bottle digging and the power of the mind (I think Golden Plantation can equally attest to this). We, as humans, have only tapped a small portion of our potential. Someday when you want to go thru the Thomas book, I'll show you what
I'm talking about. The Clubhouse and Ratafia will come too, it's just a matter of time, and not running out of ...it.

    Here's one for ya....
About 12 yrs ago, in a completely different part of Cal, I pulled a small Lilienthal and circle Fenkhausen out of the same pit.
Looks like we now have a pattern here... I would now deduce that those two brands were pushed/carried in some particular salesman's or sales agency's portfolio. My find was about 7 hours North of yours.
Two other digs in the same town produced another small Lili at one location, and a few blocks away, a clear Fenkhausen w/o the slug-plate (the older rarer German cousin). We can say that in the late 1880s-early 1890s, those two brands will appear in the same towns.

  11. I can think of several times where my desire to dig a bottle resulted in success. Talked for thirty minutes one night with a friend about Teakettles and boom, dig one the next day. Ask a friend if he's ever owned a Dr. Furbers, boom dig one the next day. Read Lou's epic JF dig, boom dig 5 JFs the next day. There are more, but those are the most recent I can think of. Explain that !!!!!!!!!

  12. I recall a similar experience many years ago. We had written permission to dig a town site on a patented claim in Northern Nevada back in the early 80's. My diggin' partner had dug an exceptionally rare token. Entombed inside a number of tin cans of decreasing size, it was dead mint, as issued. That evening, over BBQ and beerz, I spouted off how I was going to scratch one up the next day.

Dig, dig, dig. No token, but my partner pulled out a killer crude Lashes that morning. I clicked my heels three times, took my turn in the hole, and pulled out the kissing cousin of a Lashes not more than two minutes earlier.

Come to think about it; there's probably another Thos. McGriff saloon token in that same hillside still...

The power of positive thinking. Amen~
